Carel's Formula 1 season started in Silverstone's non Championship event, but he was hopelessly off the pace. He was 22nd and dead last in practice, over eleven seconds slower than pole sitter Dan Gurney. While the speed was gone from the five-year-old Porsche, reliability was still there and Carel finished 13th, just beating the private Cooper of one Jean-Claude Rudaz.
