Carel entered the Tulip Rally with his nephew Barthold Godin de Beaufort, who had some rally experience in the Tulip and Monte Carlo rallies. They retired from a fine fifth place when a crown wheel and pinion broke on a night stage between Liège and Eindhoven. Carel later claimed that the initial contacts between him and Porsche racing director Hüschke von Hanstein were laid here after the German was impressed with Carel’s driving, especially through the hills.
