Carel entered the Tulip Rally with his nephew Barthold Godin de Beaufort, who had some rally experience in the Tulip and Monte Carlo rallies. Carel's Porsche, a 356 Pre-A 1500 Super, was the car that he bought from Thieu Hezemans. It was his first Porsche and definitely not his last. Despite the fact they retired from a fine fifth place when a crown wheel and pinion broke on a night stage between Liège and Eindhoven, Carel really appreciated the build quality of his first Porsche and he was also impressed by the service at Porsche. He loved driving his Porsche 1500 Super, because it felt so good while driving spirited. No other car provided him this driving experience. Carel later claimed that the initial contacts between him and Porsche racing director Hüschke von Hanstein were laid here after the German was impressed with Carel’s driving style, especially through the hills of Luxembourg, Belgium and the Eifel Mountains in Germany.
