The Belgian Grand Prix of 1957 was run under sportscar regulations. Carel entered his Spyder in the class up to 1500 cc. The race was set to three hours length and started on a wet track that was drying rapidly in the afternoon sunshine. Tony Brooks pulled away in his works Aston Martin and would keep a commanding lead until the finish.
The smaller class saw a race-long battle between Cliff Allison of Team Lotus and Alessandro de Tomaso who drove a new desmodromic-valved OSCA. In fact the debuting OSCA led its class most of the race, but the engine blew just around La Source coming in to the pits for the final stop.
Allison inherited victory and Carel moved up to second, ahead of the second and normally valved OSCA of Isabel Haskell, De Tomaso’s American wife.
