Entry for the race was by invitation, thus works cars, the best privateers and Carel, who was guaranteed a start due to his nationality. For the first time in its history Ecurie Maarsbergen entered two cars – the regular 718 for Carel and a second car for Hans Herrmann. The Herrmann car was a modified 718, with revised 787 bodywork and wishbone front suspension.
Carel was last on the grid and only Taylor and McLaren separated him from Herrmann. They did not play a role of any importance and for most of the race they fought together, most of the time tailing Taylor's private Lotus. Carel got the better of Herrmann and they finished 14th and 15th in this race which was remarkable for the fact that nobody retired or even made a pit stop. That feat had never occurred before and it would take until 2005 for another World Championship Grand Prix to finish completely without retirements.
