It's not clear why Carel did not take part in the 1961 24 Hours of Le Mans. He was at one time on the entry list in a works Porsche with Hans Herrmann, Edgar Barth and Dan Gurney. This was an 718 RS that carried number 30 during the pre-tests and 32 during the race. It was eventually raced by Herrmann and Barth, while Gurney drove another works car. Carel however did not take part.
Some sources put him in the Ben Pon 356 that took a class victory, but Pon drove that car with Herbert Linge.
