As the Scuderia Ferrari decided to skip this non-championship event, others were left a chance, not at least the factory Porsches, the Coopers and Team Lotus. Carel didn’t take part in practice and his Porsche engine let him down as early as on lap six.
The race at the front was excitingly close and much to the dismay of the German crowd Innes Ireland put his Lotus across the line first, just one tenth of a second ahead of Bonnier's Porsche and only three tenths ahead of the Porsche of Dan Gurney.
