Twenty-four cars were entered, but only thirteen actually practiced, with the works Porsches and Team Lotus the favourites for victory. Carel qualified eighth and managed to climb up to fifth by the end of the race. He was in fact the third Porsche in the top five.
The works cars scored a 1-2 with Gurney beating Bonnier after the Lotus of Jim Clark had spun and retired on lap nineteen. He couldn’t have pleased the German crowd more.
