The organizers limited the starting field of the Italian Grand Prix to 22 with the additional condition for qualifying being that every entrant had to record a time within 10% of the second fastest practice time. Carel was very happy to make the cut in his old four-cylinder Porsche where no less than nine others failed. Practice and race itself turned out to be another battle between Hill (BRM) and Clark (Lotus). Clark once again hit trouble, leaving BRM a victorious 1-2, with Ginther comfortably second behind his team leader.

Baghetti was one of the few able to excite the Italian crowd by working his way up to third. He overdid it at Parabolica, spun and eventually came in fifth. Carel finished 10th. The most memorable event of the weekend for him was hitting a pheasant in the Royal Park during Friday afternoon practice.
