Ecurie Maarsbergen entered both its Porsches for the Austrian Grand Prix at the airfield circuit of Zeltweg. Second driver Kurt Bardi-Barry was almost three seconds slower than his team leader in practice and also failed to make any impression in the race. He retired on lap three.

The concrete airstrip surface of the track made many casualties amongst the frontrunners and thus Carel was able to make up many places after starting from tenth on the grid. Early race leader Clark and Ireland retired, leaving Jack Brabham without any serious opposition.

Tony Settember in the Scirocco managed to climb up to second place, five laps behind Brabham and he was chased home by Carel in the Maarsbergen Porsche – another fine podium finish in the very race that marked young Jochen Rindt’s international debut in Formula 1. The young Austrian qualified his Formula Junior Cooper within one and a half seconds from Carel and made a good impression before he retired on lap 21.
